Customer Review :

Do you de facto want "Reference" headphones? : SRH940 Professional Reference Headphones

I've purchased several headphones in the misguided quest for "perfect sound": Shure 420 and 530, Klipsch S4, Audiotechnica M50, Sennheiser Hd650. (My bias is in favor of that last pair, for what it's worth.)

Let's be blunt. Each of these headphones is capable of reproducing the full range of audible frequencies without distortion. Each does have its own "sonic signature," an emphasis on distinct frequency bands, but this variance falls within the modest range of sonic accuracy.

All of this is stuff I've discovered over years of principal listening. So imagine my surprise when, upon plugging in the gift pair, my ears were tickled by the most vibrant, brightly emphasized high range I've ever heard from any stereo. I'm talking about 8kHz and up: the overtones of the human voice, and the sibilance of snares and cymbals.

Now, I can imagine three cases in which this treble emphasis would be appreciated:
1) Classical records tend to be better engineered than pop music, and advantage from the revelation of extra information in this frequency range.
2) Quiet listening, since headphones with emphasized high range tend to sound louder. (The perceived volume level has more to do with the nearnessy of high frequency sound than low frequency.)
3) Older listeners, with high-frequency hearing loss.

If any of these sound like you, rest assured that the headphones are challenging and comfy, provide moderate noise-isolation, and come bundled in a protective case with exchange ear pads and two styles of modular cables.

If you've a good pair of ears and the desire to listen to anything with a drum kit, or older recordings with tape hiss, you might want to give these a miss.
